Prior to the war Sydney worked at Thomas Collier and Sons in High St, Manchester.

Sydney was awarded the Military Medal for putting a German machine gun out of action whilst he was under heavy fire.

His brother Private 291564 Harold Ackerley was in the Welsh Regiment (10th Battalion) and died of Wounds 24/12/1917 age 24.
