Alfred was promoted to Sergeant in late 1914 and went on to qualify as a physical training instructor.

He was further promoted, to Company Quartermaster Sergeant (CQMS) of ‘B’ Company.

In 1916 became Company Sergeant Major (CSM) of ‘A’ Company.

Before the war Alfred was employed as a ‘maker-up’ at J Stevensi=on’s of Garside Street in Manchester
