William Shufflebotham (Killed at Work) (1867 - 1901)
William Shufflebotham was a Van Driver's Mate when he was accidentally killed on 1st January 1901, when he fell off the van and was run over. He was 33 years old.
He was born in 1867 in Salford and married Frances Baybutt by Registrar in 1890. Although there appears to be no census return for the family before he died, there is a return for 1901 after he died. The family was living at 96, Robert Hall Street, Salford with Frances's widowed mother Mary A Baybutt. Frances was aged 33 and described as a Cloth Ender and Mender; son John was 14 and a Timber Yard Carter; Albert P was aged 10, twins Minnie and Edith were 5 and George was 2. George was to die in 1905 in his 7th year.
The Manchester Courier of 3rd January 1901 reported, "Shocking Fatality in Pendleton. A man named William Shufflebotham living in Robert Hall Street, Salford met with a shocking death on Tuesday afternoon. It appears that the man, who was employed by Pantechnicon Limited of Manchester, was sitting on one of the firm's vans as it was proceeding along Eccles New Road. He suddenly fell off the van onto the roadway in front of the wheel of the vehicle which passed over his head. Death was almost instantaneous."
Nearly eight years later, on 7th December 1908, at Christ Church Salford, Frances married again to Arthur Wood aged 37, Boatman and widower of 20, Tweed Street Salford. Frances was aged 40 and gave the same address. The groom's father was George Wood who was also a Boatman. Frances's father was George Baybutt (deceased).
Frances died in 1949 at the age of 81.
