Biographies of people buried between 1857 & 1869

William Baylis (1828 - 1869)


 

 

William Baylis started his career as a Carpenter and Joiner in Worcester, but came north to Hulme, Manchester by 1861 and shared a Draper's shop with his wife. He died in 1869 at the age of 40 and was buried in Weaste Cemetery, plot 33/DISS/2681.


He was born in 1828 at Eastnor, Herefordshire and baptised on 8th August 1828. His parents were William (born 1796 in Eastnor) and Elizabeth (nee Pritchett) Baylis (born 1796 at Eastnor), who were married on 21st July 1821 at St John's Church, Eastnor. The 1841 census shows the family lived at Clenchers Mill, Eastnor, Ledbury, Herefordshire, where William was the third child (aged 12) of four.


On 22nd December 1850, William married Jane Augusta Jones at Worcester. She was born in 1830 in Worcester and baptised on 14th March 1830, and was the daughter of Richard and Margaret Jones of Dolday Street, All Saints, Worcester. In 1851, William and Jane lodged with the Perkins family at Lowesmoor, Saint Martins, Worcester.  William was aged 22 and was a Carpenter and Joiner, and Jane was aged 20 and a Stay Maker. They must have moved to Hulme, Manchester very shortly after, as their first child, Julia Matilda was born in the fourth quarter of 1851. Their second child, Emily Jane was born in the third quarter of 1853, and their third child Florence Hannah was born in the fourth quarter of 1856.


The 1861 census shows the family lived at Drapers Shop, 90 Tamworth Street, Hulme, Manchester. William was aged 32 and described as a Draper/Horses (probably Hosier), and Jane was aged 30 and a Draper/Milliner. Julia was aged 9, Emily was aged 7 and Florence was aged 4. Later in 1861, their fourth child Frank William was born, and baptised on 4th August 1861 at St Mary's Church, Hulme. In the third quarter of 1868, their fifth child Ernest Egerton was born, and baptised on 11th October at St Mary's Church, Hulme, but sadly died on 11th December 1870, aged 2.


On 6th April 1869, William Baylis died at his home in Hulme of consumption (TB), aged 40, and was buried at Weaste Cemetery plot 32/DISS/2681 on 10th April. The 1871 census shows that, Jane (aged 40) and family lived at Embden Street, Hulme. Julia was aged 19, Emily was aged 17, Florence was aged 13 and Frank was aged 9.


On 18th September 1873, Julia married John Hill at St John's Church, Deansgate, Manchester. On 14th April 1874 Emily married James Scotson in Manchester. He was the Head Master of Peter Street School (New Jerusalem), committee member on the Manchester District Teachers Association, and Treasurer of the Manchester and District Union of Elementary Teachers. On 18th July 1883, Florence married George Henry Cauthorn at St Margaret's Church, Whalley Range, Manchester.


In April 1893, William's eldest daughter Julia Matilda Hill, died at Ancoats Hospital, Manchester, aged 40 and was buried in the family grave at Weaste Cemetery. On 27th March 1902, William's wife, Jane Baylis, died at her home, 47 Great Western Street, Moss Side Manchester aged 69. She was interred in the family grave 32/DISS/2681 at Weaste Cemetery.
