Matthew Goth was a Publican in Gorton, Manchester and died on 16th July 1916.
He was born on 24th February 1850 in Lancaster. His father was also named Matthew Goth (born 1817 in Lancaster) whose occupation was Game Keeper. His mother was Jane (nee Starnforth) Goth (born 1816 in Lancaster). They were married at St Mary's Church Lancaster on 14th May 1837.
The 1851 census shows the family living at Outhwaite, Roeburndale, Lancaster. Matthew (snr) is aged 34 and a Game Keeper and Jane is aged 35. Their children are Thomas (born 1838 in Lancaster), James (born 1841 in Lancaster), John (born 1843 in Lancaster), Margaret (born 1846 in Lancashire), Jane (born 1848 in Lancashire) and young Matthew (born1850 in Lancashire).
The 1871 census shows that 21-year-old Matthew Goth is now a Lodger at Clowes Street, Gorton, Manchester. On 22nd April 1873, Matthew married Sarah Ann Stowe at St Mark's Church, Gorton. They were both of full age and both living in West Gorton. The bride's father was recorded as James Stowe, Shopkeeper. (Manchester Rate Books show that Sarah's address in 1873 was 266, Clowes Street, Gorton). Matthew's occupation was Draftsman (which probably meant that he delivered beer).
During the 1880s Matthew and Sarah lived on Clowes Street Gorton. According to the Manchester Rate Books, the owner of their property was Alfred Stopford. There was a Stopford Brewing Company based at Chestergate, Stockport, so it is likely that he was landlord at the Gorton Brook Hotel on the corner of Clowes Street and Belle Vue Street, Gorton. Indeed, the 1891 census shows that Matthew is a Licensed Victualler, aged 41, living at Clowes Street, Gorton. Sarah is aged 38 and their children are Margaret (born 1874 in Manchester), Frederick J (born 1878 in Manchester) and Alice (born 1883 in Manchester). Sadly the family gravestone reveals three other children who died young: twins Emma and Jane, born 1876 and died 19th July 1876 aged 5 months, and Bertram born 1880 and died 7th March 1883 aged 2 years and 9 months.
In 1893, Matthew's wife Sarah Ann died at the age of 41. A year later, on 11th September 1894 Matthew married Betsy Inman Moore at the Stowell Memorial Church, Salford. Betsy was aged 24 (twenty years younger than Matthew), her address was 21, Thurlow Street, Salford and her father was William Thomas Inman Moore, who was a Tramway Inspector. The 1901 census has the couple still living at the Gorton Brook Hotel, 224, Clowes Street, Gorton. Matthew's youngest child Alice aged 18 is still with them. However, the following year on 7th October 1902, Alice married Arthur J Platt at St Mark's Church, Gorton. Arthur's father Thomas Richard Platt, was a Wine and Spirit Merchant.
The 1911 census shows Matthew, still a Licensed Victualler, aged 61 and Betsy aged 41 living at 4,Woodfield Road, Cheadle Hulme, Stockport. On 16th July 1916, Matthew died in Stockport, aged 66 and was buried in plot A11 in Weaste Cemetery. Betsy died on 17th May 1933 aged 63.
