Junia Stirzaker Jackson (1838 - 1890)


Junia Stirzaker Jackson was a Railway Clerk. His father, grandfather, one son, grandson and great grand son were also named Junia. The family gravestone reveals early deaths to three of his other sons.


He was born in 1839 in Salford, Greengate and baptised on 27th February 1839 in Manchester. His father was Junia Jackson, Commercial Traveller (1815 - 1872) and baptised on 5th November 1815 at St.Ann's Church Manchester. His mother was Margaret Jackson, nee Bleasdale and they were married at St.Mary's Church, Eccles on 8th August 1836. Junia Stirzaker Jackson's grandfather was another Junia Jackson (1791 - 1827) who married Margaret Grice (b.1792) at St. Mary's Church, Eccles on 21st April 1811.



On the 11th December 1859, J S Jackson married Mary Ann Bridge at St Stephen's Church Salford. Mary Ann (b.1840 in Salford) was the daughter of Joseph Bridge who was a Carter of 3 Waterloo Square, Salford. The 1871 Census shows that J S and Mary Ann were lining at Phoebe Street, Salford. Their children were Margaret Esther (b.1861 in Salford), Junia (b.1863 in Salford), Robert J. (b.1865 in Salford), Walter (b.1868 in Manchester) and Arthur (b.1871 in Salford).


The Warrington Evening Post of 21st May 1877 reported an event attended by Junia S Jackson. The Druids A.M.D. held their nineteenth annual, moveable assembly at Warrington Town Hall, the Mayor, Bro. C.M. Webster having kindly placed the building at their disposal.


The 1881 census shows the family still at 64, Phoebe Street Salford, with additions: Richard Barlow (b.1874 in Salford), Mary Ellen (b.1876 in Salford) and Harry (b.1880 in Salford). On 29th June 1889, tragedy struck when 22 year old Walter was killed in Rio de Janeiro whilst following his employment as a Jockey. And on 24th December 1890, Junia Stairzaker Jackson died aged 51 and was buried at Weaste Cemetery.


Tragedy struck again on 3rd January 1899 when Arthur, the devoted husband of Amelia Jackson, of Kankakee, Illinois, USA, was killed at Mobile, Alabama, aged 28. The family gravestone also reveals that Sergeant Harry Jackson of the 7th Dragoon Guards, died at Canterbury, Kent on 3rd March 1908, aged 28. The 1901 census shows that Junia's widow, Mary Ann Jackson, now aged 63, was living at 27, Trafford Road, Salford with her daughter Nellie (Mary Ellen), who was a Dressmaker. On 22nd August 1915, Mary Ann died aged 76 and was buried with her husband and sons at Weaste Cemetery, Plot F number 1588.


Junia S and Mary Ann's son Junia (b.1863 in Salford) was a Lithographer and married Sarah Ball on 15th August 1896 at St George's Church, Tyldesley, Lancashire. She was the daughter of John Ball, Hairdresser of Tyldesley. The 1911 Census shows they had three children: Mary (b.1897), Nellie (b.1902) and Junia (b.1905) all in Tyldesley. Junia married Ellen Gilbert in 1926 at St George's Church, Tyldesley and their son Junia was born in 1926, making 6 generations named Junia Jackson.
