John Cartledge (Killed at work) (1877 - 1910)

John Cartledge was a Plater's Labourer, employed in Trafford Park and died as a result of an accident at work.

John was born in Salford in 1877, the son on William Cartledge. In 1881, the family were living at Tatley Street, Salford. In 1902 he married Annie Smith at St. Clement's Church, Ordsall.

The Salford Reporter of 13th August 1910 records an Inquest into his death as follows, "Mr A Holmes, the Salford Borough Coroner, held an Inquest at Pendleton Town Hall on Friday (12th August) on the body of John Cartledge aged 33. Ann Cartledge (aged 32) of Ayr Street, Salford, stated that the deceased was her husband and was a Labourer. He was a healthy man, but had complained of pains in his back and chest. He was medically attended and was off his work frequently. He went to Salford Royal Hospital on 26th July and died on Tuesday (9th August). Dr Haynes attended him for a time. The deceased had told her that he had hurt himself whilst at work through lifting something heavy. He had not been the same man since. Dr Haynes had recommended the deceased to go to hospital as he said he had hurt his inside.

Percy Walton, residing at Fairhaven, said he was Manager for Messrs Redpath, Brown and Company Limited, Trafford Park. He never heard of any accident. A man was employed whose duty it was to report any accident to workmen. No report was made in this case. The labourers usually lifted heavy weights. William Drinkwater, employed by the same firm, said he was store-keeper and the ambulance man. The deceased never reported to him about having strained himself by lifting.

Dr. McLeod, house physician at Salford Royal Hospital, said that the deceased was admitted on 26th July. He was present at the post mortem examination of the body and it was found that death was due to rupture of an aneurism of the aorta (into the oesophagus). A verdict accordingly was returned, which the Coroner said amounted to an "Open" verdict".

The funeral of John Cartledge was held on Saturday, 13th August, where he was interred in a common grave in the Church of England portion of Weaste Cemetery. Reverend C.V.Rowe conducted the service.
