Ernest Worth Collins (1869 - 1929)


 Ernest Worth Collins was a Tailor and Draper and in 1921 he was a self-employed Merchant Tailor and Hosier in Salford.


 

He was born on 27th September 1869 in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. His father was Henry Collins (born 1841 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire) who was also a Tailor and Draper, and his mother was Emma (nee Worth) Collins (born 1841 in Huddersfield). They were married in 1863 in Huddersfield. Ernest's siblings were: Albert Henry (born 1864 in Blackburn, Lancashire), Charles W. (born 1866 in Ashton-under-Lyne), Clara Emma (born 1867 in Ashton-under-Lyne), Agnes Harriet (born 1871 in Salford), Edith Emma (born 1873 in Salford), Florence (born 1875 in Salford), Arthur (born 1877 in Salford) and Maud Augusta (born 1882 in Salford). In 1871 the Collins family lived at Windsor Terrace, Salford and in 1881 lived at 49 West High Street, Salford.


 

In March 1891, Ernest's mother Emma died at West High Street, aged 50 and was buried in grave 32/DISS/1886 at Weaste Cemetery. The census of 1891 shows that Ernest was aged 21 and a Tailor's Assistant. His father Henry was aged 50, now shown as a widower and his occupation was Tailor and Draper. Charles was aged 25 and a Locomotive Engineer, Clara was aged 23, Edith was aged 18, Arthur was aged 14, and Maud was aged 8. In November 1910 Ernest's father Henry Collins died aged 69 and was buried in grave B1/DISS/1440 at Weaste Cemetery on 19th November.


 

On 14th February 1895, Ernest Worth Collins married Alice Hampson Sykes at Christ Church, Salford. He was aged 25, Tailor, of 1 Irwell Place, Crescent, Salford. Alice (born 1873 in Radcliffe, Lancashire) was aged 21, Assistant School Mistress of 5 Adelphi Street, Salford, the daughter of John Sykes (born 1849 in Radcliffe) who was a Bleacher, and Mary (nee Hampson) Sykes (born 1841 in Radcliffe). In 1901, Alice's father John Sykes was recorded as being a patient at Salford Royal Hospital and he died on 6th June 1901 aged 52.


 

On 3rd December 1895, Ernest and Alice had a daughter Dorothy Mary. The 1901 census shows the family lived at 73 West High Street, Salford, where Ernest was aged 31 and a Tailor's Cutter; Alice was aged 27 and a Day School Teacher, and Dorothy was aged 5. In 1911 the family lived at 73 West High Street, Cross Lane, Salford. Ernest was aged 41 and a Tailor and Hosier. Alice was aged 37 and Dorothy was aged 15. Also in the house was Alice's uncle William Hampson (born 1859 at Radcliffe), who was a Callenderer. In 1918, Dorothy Mary Collins married Arthur Warwick. Wolfendale (born 19th August 1892 in Durham), in Salford by Registrar. The census of 1921 shows the Collins family home was 22, Carlton Road, Pendleton. Ernest was aged 51 and was a self-employed Merchant Tailor and Hosier, Alice was aged 47 and an Elementary School Teacher employed by Salford Education Board, Dorothy was aged 25 and her husband Arthur Wolfendale was aged 28 and a Clerk employed by the Ministry of Pensions. Ernest Worth Collins died on 19th September 1929 aged 59 and buried in the family grave at B1/DISS/1440 at Weaste Cemetery on 23rd September. Alice died on 6th April 1936 aged 62 and was re-united with Ernest on 9th April 1936.
