Charles Moseley (1833 - 1894)


Charles Moseley was an Ironmonger at 41, Regent Road, Salford.


He was born in 1833 in Manchester and on 24th March 1852 he married Mary Pugh at Manchester Cathedral. Mary was born in 1832 in Manchester.


Their children were Mary Ellen, (born in 1859 in Chorlton-on-Medlock, but sadly died in 1860, aged 1 and registered in Hulme); Maria (born in 1861 in Chorlton-on-Medlock and died in 1872 in Salford, aged 11); Frederick (born 1865 in the Regent Road area of Salford and died 1885 in Salford, aged 20) and Charles William (born 1868 in the Regent Road area of Salford).


The 1871 census shows that the family was living at Regent Road, Salford. Charles was aged 38 and his wife Mary was aged 39. Their daughter Mary was 9, Frederick was 6 and Charles William was 2 years old.


The 1891 census shows the family was still living in Regent Road, Salford and that Charles was aged 58 and an Ironmonger (probably with a shop at that address). Mary was aged 59 and their only surviving child Charles William was aged 20 and an Ironmonger's Assistant.


On 28th September 1892, Charles William married Agnes Wood at Christ Church, Salford. He was aged 23, an Ironmonger and living at 41 Regent Road, Salford. His father was described as Gentleman. Agnes was aged 22, a Dressmaker and living at 63, West High Street, Salford. Her father was Samuel Wood, Engineer.


Eighteen months later, on 8th April 1894, Charles Moseley died and was buried in Plot B2 1502 of the Dissenters portion of Weaste Cemetery. He was 61 years old. Three years later his wife Mary died on 26th January 1897 aged 64.


Charles's son Charles William and Agnes had three children Mary Olivia (born 1893 in Regent Road, Salford and married Arthur L Dawbarn in 1913 at Barton-on-Irwell Registry); Charles Samuel (born 1896 in Regent Road, Salford and married Ada E Vaughan in 1920 at Barton-on-Irwell Registry); and Agnes (born 1905 in Salford). The 1901 census shows that the family was living at 23, Pembroke Street, Pendleton. Charles was aged 31 and an Ironmonger and Agnes was aged 30. Mary Olivia was 7 and Charles Samuel was aged 4.


The 1911 census shows the family living at 37, King Street, Stretford, Manchester. Charles William was aged 40 and a Stores Clerk, Agnes was 39 and a Shopkeeper, Mary Olivia was 17 and a Packer in a Warehouse, Charles Samuel was 14 and an Apprentice Designer and young Agnes was 6 years old.


It is not known when Agnes died, but in 1919, Charles William was to marry again to Sarah Jane Embley by Barton-on-Irwell Registrar. He was 51 and she was 44. Sarah Jane, died on 30th March 1933 aged 57 and the grave inscription reads "wife and friend". Charles William died on 30th June 1941 aged 72.
